In Season: May
This month we have delicious spring lamb, venison (Roe buck) and wood pigeon that has been feeding on young beech leaves. It’s also a good month for rabbit.
On the veg front, we have the first asparagus, purple sprouting broccoli is still going, and rhubarb to follow. If you are into foraging, I can highly recommend stir-fried nettles with garlic and chilli or wild garlic. Keep an eye out for St Georges mushrooms which are common on roadsides, appearing in rings after last months deluge. I had some for lunch today and they are excellent.
We have hooked up with two local fisherman who deliver to the shop. Tony fishes from his boat KII in Hayling Island and has lobster (£19.50/kg) and wonderful large crabs (over 1kg in size £6/kg). David is now catching bass (£13/kg), mullet (£5/kg) and mackerel (£4.50/kg).
